Can Cars Drive Traffic to Your Site?

November 29th, 2007 by Carlos del Rio

What about a bus? Would you welcome traffic by bus?

Recently I have been slow in blogging in favor of a trip to Mexico, specifically Puerto Vallarta. Even in a poor country I was welcomed by a familiar sight, web addresses. Everything had a web address on it from corner breakfast places to the giant billboards that line the highway. I left my computer at home thinking: “Even if I take it where will I get WiFi?”

It turns out there is a push for Broadband right now, especially from Infinitum (TelMex). I found more Free WiFi in Mexico than I have found in my own neighborhood in Seattle. And I was left wondering at the dozens of resort and real estate signs I saw in proximity to urban areas.

Granted Puerto Vallarta is a tourist economy and caters to people who would probably get tremors from a full week without web access, but there is still an interesting microcosm. When the housing market weakened in the US it had a distinct effect on real estate and recreation of other countries. Prices in resort areas inflated, rentals in PV are almost as expensive as Seattle, but now buyers are drying up. So how do you combat a decreasing volume of potential customers and a transient population?

A website.

Well not just any website; it has to be a US top level domain (a dot com). Tourists in buses and taxis have more time and attention to pay to their environment. So why not plaster your web address on every free location? I certainly don’t remember the web address but I do remember the name of the resorts. Since coming home I have done a few searchs and found, to my surprise, that many of them are likely doing a good job of driving traffic. Because they have good control of their name space.

The same principle holds for any business in a competitive space. At some point you may be better off driving traffic where you are strong rather than fighting the crowd in most general terms.

Carlos, I haven’t been reading in awhile, and I have missed way way way too much. Good call on the title - you’re hysterical.

Question for you - have you thought about turning the into a link back to the homepage for 100 Dollar SEO? Is there any reason why you wouldn’t?

    :)

Nice pic of my sis in an earlier post :)

I’m glad you find the title funny. What are you proposing I turn into a link to the home page?

My H1 was not linked because I had a brain freeze while writing the code and misplaced my anchor. Thank you for the heads up.
