To thank Randy Ray for his many comments I am going to tackle video and news search today.
Optimizing for video searches.
Videos search should be approached in a very similar manner to searches for images.
- Use standard coding — for videos that is <object>. Include size parameters for the object and <title> attribute, <name> attribute, and <standby>.
- Surround the video in related text to your target phrases
- Use a descriptive file name — rebuild-a-vespa.mov not g4t667.avi.
- Link to you video with useful anchor text, like How to Rebuild a Vespa Engine.
News Search
Optimizing for News Search is a very different beast than most other optimization. It doesn’t matter how well you do on page optimization right now, because you are only eligible if you are published in on a News Site. For example, when Todd Friesen announced on his blog that he is becoming the VP of Search for Visible Technologies (January 21st, 2008) it was not news search worthy. But on February 13th a press release was picked up and published by half-a-dozen sites that all make news search, including Fox Business.
An interesting thing to note is that Google has recently added a direct link to Blog search, which is usually a sign that integration is happening. Some blogs already appear in news search; but I do not see any reliable indicators of what makes a blog newsworthy. For now you should focus on well optimized content in press releases and finding interested outlets that you know show up in News Search.

LOL - awesome post! What a treat to see my name mentioned in your blog like that…
Seriously, this is great information that lots of people don’t even think about. Everyone is so busy optimizing pages for the main Google search page that they don’t think about optimizing for image search, video search, news search, etc. And those are all legitimate channels too.
One comment about optimizing for a Google New search. The best optimization resource I’ve seen for that are the guidelines on Google’s site, at http://www.google.com/support/news_pub/. They list a whole mess of things your site has to do just to be featured in Google News, like having a unique 3+ digit number in your article URL’s.
I disagree with the numeric requirement that Google uses for News. It seems arbitrary to me and so I suspect that they are trying to circumvent some other system by encouraging people to make less valuable URLs.
