SEO and the Development Cycle

January 9th, 2008 by Carlos del Rio

Jessica Bowman, the in-house SEO evangelist at Yahoo!, posted and article on where SEO belongs in the development cycle of a website. Here answer is, apparently, everywhere. She suggests that search optimization concerns should be addressed through out the process, especially at the beginning when you are setting goals for projects, at change points, and that quality assurance efforts should be informed by understanding of the more subtle things that can go wrong (like implementation of 301 re-directs).

This is a great way to go about it if you have an in-house person, but what do you do if you are outsourcing? The points where injection of SEO information is critical is at the beginning of your project and again prior to launch. If you are on a strict budget you should be having research and a strategy built by a consultant and bring them back in for QA. An important note is that you should tell them what recommendations you attempted to implement and which ones you left out so they can most efficiently give you feedback.
