SEOmoz Landing Competition, A Fierce Battle.

September 17th, 2007 by Carlos del Rio

Congratulations to Paul Robb, who won the competition, beating my entry by 0.14%.

It is exciting that the two entries were so close that SEOmoz had to extend the competition by 3 weeks to reach confidence on which had a higher conversion rate. Both of the entries made significant improvements over the original — increasing the conversion rate from 0.5% to 2.41% (mine) and 2.55% (Paul’s). Both pages increased conversions by about five times!

The results show that there are many ways to go with your improvements that can yield impressive results. There is one metric that my version excelled at — getting people to take the first step. Because it was simple. Rob in the end was able to close more conversions because the long copy help relieve anxiety about the expenditure. Look them both over and get a feel for what directions you can take your pages that don’t work the way you want. Hopefully we will get some more data about the way people use these landing pages.

I imagine that Rob’s is more effective with brand new visitors, because my version relies heavily on the branding that SEOmoz has already established in the search community and through quotations in major media.

Good work to everyone who entered and thank you SEOmoz for the opportunity to test my skills in a fun competition.

Additionally I want to thank Point It! for helping me out by giving me eyes on the design and strong critique on the landing page.
