Some Of The People Some Of The Time

Some of you have probably noticed that StumbleUpon users are somewhat antagonistic toward people who are suspected of trying to game the system. Today I saw an amazing example of seeing what one can get away with.

While stumbling this evening I landed on a Sphinn posting for a MLM blog that is “closing” after a month because it has “too much” business. I guess you can’t blame a man for trying, but I feel that the only value in the experience is the weird meta-marketing event. The person running this multi-level social media scheme is marketing to StumbleUpon users that know what Sphinn is and will believe that a one-month old MLM blog is shutting down to serve its clients.

That is three levels of marketing 2 social media 1 general. I the content becomes a bit thin at this junction. Really, you want to share with me that you want to share with me that you want to share with me that time is running out. I think that most people that are exposed to this piece of marketing are more likely to buy a narwhal egg* then respond to the blog at the end of this chain.

One of the first steps in marketing should be asking: Who is my customer?  Perhaps this fellow skipped the first step, or maybe he just didn’t think about the audience of this particular campaign. Remember when you choose your distribution channel you are also shoosing who you talk to.

* Narwhals are a type of whale and don’t lay eggs. But I wish they did, because I think that a giant omelette would be amazing.
